Telling the Families

This is the story of how Scott and I told our families -

Scott and I knew we wanted to do something fun and memorable in telling our families we were having a baby. For my side this is grandbaby # 7. For Scott’s this is grandbaby # 1. So we wanted a fun story that can be retold over and over again.

Coming up with the plan -

We knew we were going to Kentucky for a weekend, we knew our families liked to eat, and we knew we wanted to tell everyone at the same time. We would have one shot at all of us getting together at the same time - Our traditional Sunday morning breakfast at Ramsey's.

We had hatched the plan about 2 weeks before we went to Kentucky - Scott went and had copies made of our first ultra-sound to give to everyone - the plan was going to work and be AWESOME!

The Plan -

We didn’t want to do anything to elaborate or complicated. Simple is better. We would all arrive at Ramsey’s for breakfast, try to figure out where everyone was sitting, wait on those who are late, and then before we order our food we would make the announcement. Simple!

What went wrong -

There is no doubt it is MY fault this plan fell through. We arrived in Kentucky on Saturday and went straight to Scott’s parent’s house to drop Virgil off before heading to my niece’s birthday party. As soon as we walked in - I looked at Scott and smiled. I don’t know what happened. I couldn’t hang out all day Saturday surrounded by my family and wait until Sunday at breakfast to tell them the news. There was NO way! I was too excited and too happy!

So after a mental debate between Scott and I (think Lilly and Marshal from How I Met Your Mother), he gave in, and we told his parents. Then in the car on the way to my niece’s birthday party we called my Dad to make sure he was going to be there - he said NO! So I ended up telling him over the phone. Then, my step-mom at the birthday party and my sisters Julie and Casey towards the end of the birthday party. There were only 3 people who we ended up sticking to the original plan - My brother and sister-in-law and Scott’s youngest brother. And the only part of the plan that we stayed with was that we told them at Ramsey’s on Sunday :-).

Moral of the story -

Calling an audible and being able to change your plans at the drop of a hat is one way to prepare you for parenthood. Well, that’s what I am telling myself anyway :-)

I'm What?!?!

Here is the story about how we found out I was pregnant -

On Wednesday February 9th I was having a pity party for myself because it was my birthday, Scott was in Las Vegas for work, and I was alone. I was looking at my calendar at work figuring out when Scott got home when I realize "um, I am a week late". For the next 4 hours at work I was trying to calculate how that couldn't be. I mean, I am horrible with math so, of course, I just added, subtracted, multiplied or divided wrong. Right?!?!? I was in complete and utter denial. I went home and ate a pint of ice cream for dinner. It was my birthday after all I could eat whatever I wanted! I was the same way on Thursday, trying to figure out how I had some how added the days up wrong - this continued through Friday afternoon. By lunch on Friday I decided that I would buy a pregnancy test after work. I would only have to know for a few hours, if I was or wasn't for a few hours before Scott got home.

Um no one ever told me how expensive pregnancy tests are! I decided that since I was going to pee on this thing and then throw it away I was getting the cheapest one I could find and if needed I would come back and get another kind if I didn't like the answer.

Took the test and before the 2- minutes were up the + sign showed up. Huh - I guess I am pregnant! And then Scott's plane gets delayed! Are you kidding me!?!?! So around 11:00 Scott walks in the door and both he and I are exhausted. We sort of talked and then went to bed. I didn't want to tell him when I knew he was tired (aka - hung over).

At 6:30 Virgil and I get up and go downstairs. I am telling Scott as soon as he wakes up! The longest 3. HOURS. LATER! I hear Scott get up and go into the bathroom. I run up the stairs and both Virgil and I jump in the bed, patiently, NOT, waiting on Scott to come out.

When he comes out I tell him that I need to tell him something - I am pregnant. He gets this goofy grin and says really? and I just shake my head yes because I start hysterically crying. And I mean, not able to breathe, sobbing, snot coming out my nose, face contorted crying! Scott was just hugging me saying he was happy.

Our First Final Four

After being apart for the past few weeks, Alex & I decided to take advantage of the Kentucky Wildcats’ Final Four run and make the trip to Houston. I vividly remember the past 3 UK Final Fours (1996, 1997 & 1998). I was in college and I thought… you know, it would be great to go one day. In fact, once I graduate, I’m going to the next one. Little did I know that it would take 13 YEARS for that to happen again. Of course, there was no way I was letting this chance pass by.

Obviously, it would be a great time seeing the Cats make a run at the Title, but more importantly, we would be able to see each other for a few days. So… I took the red-eye flight from Honolulu to Houston and Alex took the “Early A$$ Saturday morning flight” from Newark to Houston.

We took in the Semi-Final games on Saturday night (Go Butler…. Boooo UCONN). Ventured downtown to the Jamfest on Sunday to see Uncle Kracker & Kenny Chesney in concert and lastly cheered for Butler as they fought against UCONN on Monday night in the Finals.

Although the Cats weren’t able to bring it home, we were able to watch great basketball (at times), meet up with one of Alex’s good friends AND….. See Kenny Chesney in Concert.

All in All… Not a bad way to spend a few days with the best looking Kentucky Fan I know.
